Drew Petersen • 01
Drew Petersen’s childhood playground was the steep, north-facing slopes of Colorado’s Arapahoe Basin, but he has since moved west to Salt Lake City to lap Alta and study marketing at the University of Utah. Once a big mountain competition skier, Petersen now both skis for the camera and writes the stories behind the resulting photos. When he is not traveling to peaks both near and far, he can be found getting lost in his favorite corners of the Wasatch Range, conversing with mountain goats about what beer to drink in the parking lot.
Robin Brown • 02
Robin Brown lives in the “best base camp imaginable,” Grand Junction, CO, with her husband and two children. They spend most of their time biking, running, boating, skiing, camping, hunting and fishing. When she isn’t promoting western Colorado outdoor recreation and tourism industries through her business, BrownHouse PR, she’s writing about it in her weekly column for the local newspaper, The Daily Sentinel. Her unexpected ski trip to Iraq was a great reminder that, yes, there is life outside of Colorado, and, yes, she should explore it a little more often.
Nick VanHorn • 03
When they taught him to ski at age 4, Nick VanHorn’s parents had no idea the monster they were creating. Thirty-two years later, the simple art of sliding on snow is still directing Nick’s life choices, despite all attempted intervention. The best decision he made was buying a camera and following advice to move to Whitefish, MT, where he still lives. During the warmer months, Nick can be found riding his bike, exploring a lifetime’s worth of trout streams, and searching for the perfect street taco with his partner in crime, Adelle.
Ryan Waterfield • 04
As a Kentucky native, by the time Ryan Waterfield moved to Sun Valley, ID at age 22, she had avoided all snow-centric activities. After dating a ski bum (free ski lessons) and buying better gear (no more plastic bags as gloves), she realized playing in the snow wasn’t so bad. To support her love of all things mountain-related, in 2015 Ryan swapped a teaching job for one in publishing when she started BigLife Magazine, meaning all her adventures are theoretically now tax write-offs. Ryan is the mom of Townes, 8, and Zula, 4, who have been on snow and in proper gloves since they were born.
Gloria Goñi-Mcateer • 05
Gloria Goñi-Mcateer wasn’t always a skier. As a child, her parents coaxed her down the slopes with candy bribes, feeding both her sugar cravings and eventual skiing addiction. Having lived in both Northern Spain and the United States, Gloria has skied at many resorts, but now calls Washington state’s Mt. Baker Ski Area home. Through her photography, writing and skiing, Gloria hopes to entice more women and other under-represented groups into her beloved mountain playground. In her free time, she studies biology and mathematics at Bellingham’s Western Washington University.
