Mike “Dawsy” Dawson (01)
Mike “Dawsy” Dawson may have gotten a late start in the mountain photography world, but he’s been making up for it ever since. Once a Connecticut-based financial associate, he picked up a camera in earnest after college, shifting his narrative west to shoot some of the biggest snowboard events and athletes in the business. With published shots in The Snowboarder’s Journal and Snowboarder Magazine, he earned notoriety for his ability to capture the nuance of a style-conscious sport, eventually earning him full-time photographer gigs with Woodward Tahoe and the U.S. Team. After a couple years with the Team, he was brought on to be Mikaela Shiffrin’s full-time photographer. He has also been awarded the Doug Pensinger Sports Photography Grant for excellence in photography.
Cirque Gammelin (02)
Cirque Gammelin is a Seattle-based photographer and graduate student at the University of Washington who finds joy in sharing stories driven by curiosity. Raised on the “good side” of the Tetons, the Idahoan was spoiled by untracked powder and has never been able to turn away from the allure of snow. While he is no fan of rain, exploring the diversity and expanse of the Cascades has become a passion. When there is no skiing to be had, he spends his time on the Alaska Peninsula studying the impacts of climate change on juvenile sockeye salmon.
Vanessa Chavarriaga Posada (03)
Vanessa Chavarriaga Posada is an environmental sociologist and outdoor athlete from Medellín, Colombia. She is a three-culture kid whose childhood was split between Colombia, the U.S. and Mexico. As an immigrant and woman of color, Vanessa recognizes the systemic barriers that keep BIPOC out of outdoor spaces. She says taking up space in the outdoor community feels revolutionary. Her work now focuses on the intersections of race, identity and nature through sponsored content, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion education, public speaking and writing.
Rachel Werner (04)
Growing up next to Alberta, Canada’s Icefields Parkway, Rachel witnessed how skiing brought people together while simultaneously putting them back together. Spending the prime years of adolescence in a brain fog of mental health issues, skiing, self-discipline and any stranger on the skin track who was willing to talk became a top priority. Rachel says it didn’t take long to realize that everyone has their own success story and a messy, snowshoed-over skin track to get there. She also knows that often those make the best stories. Her exclusive interview with Jack Kuenzle is Rachel’s first piece for The Ski Journal.
