I broke my A-arm on my sled on our initial scouting mission, but after driving one and a half hours to pick up parts and tools, we finished repairing the sled at 1 a.m. For the next two days, we scored untouched snow amid spires of red rock.” Photo: Noah Wetzel 02 • “I had to keep my car motor on the whole night to keep my camera gear from freezing, but eventually Mainio Ormio stomped a backslide safety in the pitch-dark cold of Joensuu, Finland.” Photo: Arttu Heikkinen 03 • “Another minus-22-degree Fahrenheit night in Joensuu, Finland. Teemu Tirkkonen launches air to fakie over an old saw machine. It was so cold my flashes stopped working, so I had to take a long exposure with a tripod using manual flashes. This shot is composed of two different photos because I had to light both sides of the image separately.” Photo: Arttu Heikkinen 04 • “Toward the end of a waist-deep April day at Mt. Baker Ski Area, WA, I went to scope this drop with a few friends. Sure enough, snow-boarder Matteo Soltane and skier Willick Johnson, pictured here, were up top, with Mervin Mfg filmer Tim Stanford down below. Soltane overshot a touch and missed the pillow, then Johnson tapped it just right and rode away clean. Afterward, I introduced myself to the kid—I had no idea who he was. Needless to say, he made a strong first impression.” Photo: Colin Wiseman 05 • Kiwi young gun Ben Richard floats a classic 360 in Engelberg, Swit-zerland.
