Ever since I first went to Kebnekaise, Sweden, to hike in the summer of 2014, I really wanted to come back on skis. After an unsuccessful trip in 2015, I returned in 2018 with Andy Vogel. Vogel’s experience in big mountains was invaluable, as the conditions were tricky and the weather far from pleasant. Still he skied hard, charging down Rullevarerännan—a 1,500-verti-cal-foot, 50-degree couloir and a steeps skier’s dream. Andy Vogel navigates the steeps above his drop, hik-ing up Rullevarerännan, a striking couloir near Mount Tuolpagorni, a volcano outside of Lappland, Sweden. The Keb Classic skimo race takes place on and around Keb-nekaise, the highest peak in Sweden, every Easter. Here, race director Krister Jonsson tours on the ridge between the north and south summits of Kebnekaise, making the last check of the course just before the participants in the race arrive. 090 The Ski Journal
