COVER “When former Olympic ski racer Jeremy Nobis blasted onto the freeride scene in 1997, he was fresh off the US Ski Team and fully motivated. He journeyed to Val-dez, AK to film with Teton Gravity Research that same year, and ‘Psycho Nobi’s’ aggressive run down a line called Pyramid cemented his legendary status. Peo-ple thought he was nuts, but as I continued to work with Jeremy, I realized—like most of the rock-star skiers of the era—he was far more calculated than crazy.” Photo: Flip McCririck TIPS UP 01 • Featured in countless ski movies and iconic ski photos, Retallack Lodge—lo-cated just outside the tiny town of New Denver, BC—is famous for its convoluted pillow stacks, spine lines and general feature-filled terrain. It’s deep, deep powder is also legendary. Ian McIntosh samples the goods in January of 2017. During long spring days, it’s often as fun to watch people rip their favorite lines as it is to ski yours. One day we saw this solo skier standing above a Revy classic. He or she paused for a few minutes to soak up the sun before slashing a dozen graceful turns back toward the skin track.” Photo: Bruno Long 03 • “It’s one thing to find a line, it’s another to ride it. Kye Petersen is a master at both. This hidden feature is only a short skin from one of coastal British Columbia’s better-known snowmobile roads, and in January we headed up to shoot it for his 2017 movie, Numinous . The drop was totally blind, but Kye stomped it for one of the biggest pillow lines in the film.” Photo: Daniel Rönnbäck 04 • “I’ve long known deep snow and Japan are practically synonymous, but I had never experienced a true ‘Japow’ day until last February at Shiga Kogen, the country’s oldest and largest resort. That evening the parking lot had been snow-free, but by morning most cars were completely buried, creating a scene like something out of a post-apocalyptic movie.” Photo: Bruno Long 05-06 • Jackson Hole Mountain Resort had a big year in 2016/17, with many classic, neck-deep Wyoming powder days. Thayne Rich takes a breath and samples the goods with a January hand-drag. By the second lap, Carston Oliver was skiing like it was midseason.” Photo: Adam Clark 08 • “The terrain outside of Petersburg, AK is very distinct, full of big, mean and angular features. Nick McNutt’s playful style was a perfect contrast, and while filming Teton Gravity Research’s 2017 film, Rogue Elements , he cleaned every feature with ease.” Photo: Nic Alegre 09 • “Last winter, three snowboarder friends invited me to shoot on this concrete silo feature in Laax, Switzerland, which looked interesting, but I was hesitant to hit it. We decided to build the quarterpipe anyway, and after three hours of digging it was ready to session. I decided to try this one-foot safety at the end of the day, and despite my initial uncertainty, it worked out.”— Daniel Loosli Photo: Lou Staub The Ski Journal 017
